H. Junjappa
Prof. Dr. H.Junjappa
Sr. Scientist and Research Professor
H.Junjappa was born on 23rd May, 1936 in Aladgeri village, Taluk: Hirekerur, Dharwar Dist. in Karnataka state. He received his B.Sc. (1958) and M.Sc degree (1960) in chemistry from Karnataka University, Dharwar and continued research in the same university in organic chemistry under the guidance of Prof.S.Siddappa and received his Ph.D degree in 1964. He then worked as postdoctoral fellow at Department of Chemistry, IIT, Kanpur under Professor M.V.George (1965-1967) and moved subsequently to Ohio State Uni., Columbus, USA as postdoctoral fellow to work with Prof. M.S. Newman (1967-1969). He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow in Texas Tech. University, Lubbock under Professor H.J.Shine (1969-1970). He returned to India initially to join as pool officer (CSIR) at Central Drug Research Institute, Lucknow (1970) and subsequently joined there as scientist in the Medicinal Chemistry Division (1971-1976). He then moved to newly established North Eastern Hill University, Shillong as a founder Head to start the new Chemistry Department and continued there till his retirement in 1998. Later he joined as emeritus scientist (CSIR) at Department of Chemistry at IIT Kanpur (1998-2001) and subsequently moved to Bangalore in 2002 .Currently Prof. Junjappa is a INSA Sr. Scientist and research professor at REVA Institute of Science & Management, Yelahanka, Bangalore – 64.
Academic and Research Contribution
Dr. Junjappa married his fellow researcher Dr. Ila in 1971 and together they moved to NEHU, Shillong and continued to do research all through their career. Junjappa began his own independent research career at CDRI, Lucknow in the area of synthetic organic chemistry and developed a powerful synthetic chemistry area based on polarized ketene dithioacetals, a class of versatile building blocks, easily accessible from wide range of active methylene compounds and developed new general synthetic methodologies for a large variety of biologically important five and six membered heterocycles. Besides, he has developed a new method for regiospecific construction of substituted and fused aromatic ring from easily accessible acyclic precursors. This discovery, now known as "The Junjappa – Ila(JI) Aromatic and Heteroaromatic Annulation (Review: Progress in Heterocyclic Chemistry, Vol. 13,p.1,2001, Pergamon, New York) provides for the first time new general regiospcific routes for a large variety of substituted and fused polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons starting from benzene, naphthalenes, phenathrene, athracene and their benzo derivatives, part of this discovery is the evolution of (3+3) annulation to the general synthesis of biologically important benzoheterocycles.
Other Contributions:
Over 60 students have received Ph.D. degree under his supervision; Prof Junjappa and Prof Ila together published more than 220 papers in international journals; Prof Junjappa delivered R.C.Shah memorial lecture (1995). T.R.Sheshadri Memorial lecture(1996), 4th Dr. Sukh Dev Endowment lecture (1996); visiting professor, Iberdrola National Foundation, Savilla, Spain (1999). Prof. Shilpa is currently the head of department, School of Biotechnology. Prof. Shilpa has graduated in Bachelors - Biotechnology and Masters - Biotechnology degree from Bangalore University. She pursued her MPhil from Bharathidasan University, Tamilnadu, India. She has been actively involved in teaching and also has research experience in various fields of life science. Her research work is focused on molecular biology and plant tissue culture. Prof. Shilpa’s laboratory expertise include gene isolation amplification and cloning, expression in plant cell to improve a particular trait such as fruit taste and shelf life. She has guided many PG students’ project from different stream of life sciences. Her expertise is in the field of molecular biology, cell biology and genetic engineering. Dr. Manjula has graduated in Biochemistry and Masters in Applied Genetics from Bangalore University. She worked on Neurobiology of aging for her Doctoral degree in Bangalore University under the guidance of Dr. Asha Devi. She completed her PG Diploma from National Law School of India University in Intellectual Property Rights. She is GATE-2007 and KSET-2013 qualified in life sciences. She has secured Third Rank in M.Sc. Bangalore University.
She has been working as Assistant professor in REVA institutions since June 2016 prior to this position; she was involved in active research in Lab Gerontology, Bangalore University (2008-2014). She worked as trainee in NIMHANS (Neurochemistry Department) under the guidance of Dr. Taranath Shetty. She was selected as Scientist B in Genetics and insect breeding in Central Silk Board. She is been teaching Genetics since 2005. She has published papers in the reputed international journals with high impact factor. She has a text book chapter in the international Nova publishers for her credit. She has presented research papers in National and international conferences. Her Research interests are in field of brain aging.

Dr. V. Veena is enthusiast young researcher currently working as Assistant Professor at School of Chemical and Biological Sciences, REVA University, Bangalore, India. Dr. Veena obtained doctoral studies from Pondicherry University, India. She is a recipient of junior and senior research fellow, a meritorious award from Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and University Grant Commission (UGC), Government of India. She was also awarded Research Project Assistant in UGC-SAP (special assistant program) by Department of Biotechnology, Pondicherry University, India. She has 8 years of Research experiences and one year of teaching experience for the pre-researchers, post graduate and graduate students. Her research contributions were published in highly reputated International Journals. She is also reviewer of some journals and invited speaker for National and International conferences. Her area of Research includes small molecules of diverse origin for cancer therapy and nanophotosensitisers for photodynamic therapy. Her vision is to provide high quality research to the students for the development of scientific society in India.

Kumar. He is reciepient of Junior Scientist Award2013 from NESA (National Environmental Science Academy), New Delhi and qualified ASRB NET 2016. He has worked in various research projects funded by DBT, Kirk House Trust, UK as Senior Research Fellow, Research Associate with highly distinguished and eminent Scientists like Dr.P.H.Ramanjini gowda and Dr SheshaSai, to his credit 12years of research experience at University of Agricultural Sciences Bengaluru (UAS (B)), 4years of teaching experience at Azyme Biosciences Pvt Ltd,Bengaluru and 2 years of industry experience as Application Scientist at JH Bio innovations. He has undergone training, served as Team Leader and Resource person in the national and international training programmes on Molecular Biology Techniquesconducted by Kirk House Trust UK, Department of Biotechnology, New Delhi in association with UAS (B). Dr. LigiMilesh received her doctoral degree in biotechnology from Jain University in 2017. Her area of research was mainly focused on Trypanosomaevansi and its monoclonal antibody using hybridoma technology which were further used for the development of two diagnostic ELISA based assay for the detection of antibody and antigen of T.evansi used for mass screening and surveillance studies. She has got around 6 years of research experience at various research organizations. She has got 2 patents and nine publications in her credits with 6 international and 3 national publications. She has also presented her work at various conferences/symposium and was awarded with the best presentation award for her Ph.D. work from Jain University by Mrs. KiranMajumdar Shaw, MD, Biocon Ltd. Dr. LigiMilesh is presently working as an Assistant Professor at the School of Chemical and Biological Sciences, REVA University. Her research Interest is related to cancer or tumor biology using animal models.

Ms. Renuka Madhu has graduated in Bachelors – Agriculture from Kerala Agricultural University and secured first rank in BSc (Ag), Masters in Horticulture from TNAU with ICAR scholarship. She qualified NET IN 2014 and worked in Multinational Company, Intel Soft Pvt Ltd, Bangalore for 2 years as a Knowledge Consultant in Botany. She has teaching experience of 8 years and has guided 8 in-house student projects. She has also published her research work in Indian Journal of Agricultural Research. Her specialization is in the domain of Plant and Agricultural Biotechnology, Environmental Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering, Plant Tissue culture being the research area of Interest. She has attended many National and International seminars and conference. She has also undergone Faculty Development Programs in the domains of Plant Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering for skill enhancement. Her passion for teaching was acknowledged by conferring Best Teacher Award in 2015 by REVA University.

Mr.Anupam received his Masters degree in Biotechnology from Bangalore University in 2008. He went on to pursue further studies at the University of Ulster, UK and received another Masters qualification in Biotechnology. Anupam has over 6 years of research experience at several reputed research groups including the University of Ulster, UK, Indian Institute of Science, India, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and University of Antwerpen, Belgium. He has also published several papers in high impact factor journals and presented research papers at National and International conferences. Anupam has extensive experience in Bioinformatics and Next Generation Sequencing. He is presently pursuing his PhD Degree on Metagenomic assessment of soil samples to achieve sustainable soil management.

Dr. MADHUSUDANA REDDY M. B, is an Assistant Professor of Chemistry in School of Chemical Sciences at REVA University, Bangalore, India. He received his M. Sc., Chemistry from the Bangalore University in the year 2003 and Ph. D. for the"Synthesis of biologically important compounds in organic chemistry" from Bangalore University in 2012 under the guidance of Prof. M. A. Pasha. Laterhe selected for the prestigious Dr. UGC-Kothari Post-doctoral fellowshipunder the guidance of Prof. P. Balaram, Director at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, in the area of"Design, synthesis and conformation of hybrid peptides" for three years.
Professor Reddy worked as a lecturer in different prestigious colleges for UG and PG about 8 years.His teaching interests are Organic Chemistry, General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, engineering chemistry and Spectroscopy.
Professor Reddy's research areas includes: (1) Organic method development using heterogeneous catalysis by metal nanoparticles, nanostructures and nanocomposites, (2) eco-friendly organic synthesis by green chemistry protocols (3) Synthesis and conformation of hybrid peptides and (4) Isolation and characterization of bioactive molecules and peptides from natural sources. Dr. SAKTHIVEL KANDAIAH, Assistant professor, School of Chemical and Biological Sciences, REVA University – Bengaluru holds PhD degree from Max Planck Institute of Solid state Research – Stuttgart, Germany, in the areas of Solidstate and electrochemistry under the guidance of Prof. Martin Jansen. He was awarded with Max Planck society research fellowship for his doctoral studies. He has research experience from various reputed institutions in India and abroad ie., Indian Institute of Science – Bangalore, Indian Institute of Technology- Bombay, Indian Institute of Technology - Delhi, Max Planck Institute - Germany. He has total of 14 years of research and teaching experience. His research interests are in electrochemical energy conversion materials and devices, electrochemical synthesis of novel electrode materials and thin film nanomaterials. Recently he has been awarded with Department of Science and Technology – India Young Scientist Research grant for the project work in the area of nanomaterials for photoelectrochemical hydrogen generation. He had published his research works in international journals. Also he was involved in introducing new courses in the area of nanoscience and nanotechnology for undergraduate and postgraduate students. His current research focuses are on electrode materials for solar energy conversion devices, Future clean fuel and environmental remediation.
