5 Great Options for Law Careers in India

Being one the most prestigious and challenging fields to work in, studying law is not only interesting, but also something that offers various options for an aspirant to choose from. 

Some of the most sought-after options if you choose law as a career are listed below.

  1. Advocates – This is the most sought-after career path chosen by students studying law. This profession has its charm since it offers the aspirants a deep perspective of the law and after the understanding of various aspects of law, one can choose to practise as a junior advocate under a senior advocate to gain much needed experience and then move to becoming an individual advocate. This requires the students to clear the All India Bar Council to qualify to practise in the court.
     
  2. Legal Advisors and Government Services – After completion of LL.B., if this is a preferred option, aspirants are required to clear the exam conducted by the Public Service Commission. Once qualified, they can choose to join various law firms, corporate firms or banks which need advice on legal matters. Qualified candidates can also join the Airforce, Indian Army and the Navy. Apart from that, the aspirants who have cleared the UPSC (Union Public Services Commission) or SPSC (State Public Service Commission) also have the option of choosing the career of a public prosecutor. They can also to choose to work with the Legislation Counsel in the Legislative department or as Legal advisors in the Department of Legal Affairs.

Judiciary – Although a difficult examination to clear, if students work hard to qualify in the Judicial examination conducted by the Public Service Commission, they can opt for a career of a judge or magistrate. After serving as a sub judge, magistrate or munsif in the civil cases, they could go on to become district judges through experience and seniority.
     
  4. Academics and Writing – Aspirants who have impeccable academic record and have been working on the improving their knowledge of the law by research work or LLM or by specializing in the fields of International Law, Constitutional Law, Labour Law, Cyber Law and Family Law, can choose to become teaching faculty in recognized universities of law colleges across the county if they possess the addition zeal and skill to teach and explain law. A deep knowledge in this field also keep the window open for such candidates to author or edit books on law or to write legal reports for newspapers or other publications. They can also work along journalists aiding them in writing their reports.
     
  5. Social work/NGOs – If one is deeply inclined towards the betterment of the society, being a law graduate is undoubtedly something that best equips them for it.
