7 Ways to be a More Creative Student this Year

7 Ways to be a More Creative Student this Year

“Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.”

– Steve Jobs

Steve Jobs has rightly said that ideas are connected. It is a process where you use your imagination to turn ideas into reality. The more you use your creativity, the better you perform. Creativity revolves around two processes: conceptualizing ideas and reproducing them. It’s when you act upon your ideas, you achieve your goals. You could be a student or a working professional, being creative can pave the way for better opportunities and a rewarding future. It is a skill that can be mastered over time.

Here is an interesting video by George Land delivering a TED talk on his study on creativity. In this video, he highlights the significance of creativity and how humans can nurture it.

College life is the most happening time of your life, so you should make it worthwhile. We all know, lectures and exams can sometimes be boring, but you can get involved, exercise your creativity and make your student life fun. The key to a successful college life is creativity, and here are 7 ways to be a more creative student in 2019.

  1. Get involved

Are you a writer? Or do you like playing football? With plenty of student organizations and clubs in your college, you can utilize your creative input. Get involved in whatever you like even if it not mainstream. If you are good with planning and coordination, help a group organize an event. You can take the initiative to design t-shirts or any apparel for a particular event if your interest lies in graphic designing.

  1. Try new things

One of the best ways to get your creative juices flowing is by doing something that you have never done before. If you usually read non-fiction, try a bestselling fiction novel this time.  Start going for evening walks, if you normally visit the library then. Try something new to break away from and get a creative epiphany.

  1. Ask questions

Accepting things the way at face value hinders creative process. Instead, be curious and ask questions. Whether it is academics or not, asking questions will help you gain the confidence to share your opinion and take risks.

  1. Just do it

Don’t wait for the right moment to start something. If you are planning to paint something, start off now. There is always scope of improvement. Want to write a book? Start with the first chapter today.

  1. Exercise

Although it might not sound so effective, exercise will calm and clear your mind. If you are both physically and mentally fit, you can come up with numerous creative ideas. Ensure that you get enough sleep and 30-40 minutes of exercise every day.

  1. Unplug

Sometimes, don’t push yourself and take a break. You might get some brilliant ideas when you are not wracking your brain for a specific project. Great ideas sometimes pop up when you are about to sleep, driving, or watching a sunrise.

  1. Seek advice

Don’t be shy to ask for advice and help from friends, family, or peers. They might provide a creative solution to a problem you are stuck with. A fresh approach and perspective are what you need to spark creative thinking.
