Making students ready today for jobs in the post pandemic era

Making students ready today for jobs in the post pandemic era

A few weeks ago, REVA University organised the 6th Annual Convocation on campus. More than 3,800 students were conferred degrees and 45 meritorious students and toppers from various disciplines were awarded gold medals on this occasion.

It was a memorable day to me and will remain a special memory as we conducted an offline event on campus amid students after a long span of 18 months. These last 18 months have been difficult for all, but the student community has taken a slightly heavier burden than others. Since we got an opportunity to ease their burden a little and lighten up their moods, REVA decided to go ahead with an offline event.

Of course, this meant a lot of precautions had to be taken to ensure student safety on campus. To successfully conduct the event, 9 clusters were formed for students of different disciplines. Apart from the open-air theatre spread over 2 acres on the campus, various venues like Amphitheatre, Kuvempu Auditorium, and other venues were set up for the event.

We demarcated separate entry and exit points, a separate schedule was allotted for each cluster, and seating and lunch arrangements too were made as per the student strength in each cluster. The University adopted all necessary COVID-19 protocols like demarcating spots for social distancing, mandatory use of masks and sanitizers, and restrictions on gathering a large crowd at one point.

I am delighted to share that the event was conducted successfully, and I am confident that the graduated students are mentored and guided to achieve their goals. I am hopeful they will be successful in whatever path they choose – entrepreneurship or employment.

Focus on multidisciplinary studies – the need of the hour

During the event, I got an opportunity to interact with students, fellow academicians, and industry experts. From these interactions, I concluded that it is inevitable for educational institutions to prepare for the future, a future in the post-pandemic era.
Now, in the job market that is preparing for the future, more than degree certificates, certification programmes, upskilling in selected sectors make big difference in a student’s career path. Even more importantly, a degree in multidisciplinary studies holds more value and attracts more job opportunities, as industries are looking for candidates with varied skills. It will not be surprising if one day an engineer will be expected to have a certification in linguistic skills. Job roles in the future will be versatile and dynamic.

In this direction, I am happy that REVA University is one of the few leading multidisciplinary universities in South India, and we have adopted an interdisciplinary approach.

Also, it is important to note that students will be performing many jobs that do not even exist today. Hence, to be prepared for the future, students must take on the path of self-learning and exploring, discover new areas, and be open to learn across multiple disciplines.

Ushering in Festive season with precautions

Finally, it is the season of festivals and holidays, and I must tell you all not to forget COVID appropriate behaviour. Although we are regaining normalcy slowly, and it is heartening to see students lead a normal life, it is crucial to maintain distance and wear masks. Especially the students who are travelling to outstations must remember to be on guard while on transit.

I wish a very prosperous Ayudha Pooja and Vijaya Dashami to all of you.

God Bless.
