Tips to Improve Your Memory During Exams

Do you fear of forgetting everything before entering the exam hall? Are you scared that your mind will go blank as you start writing the exam? Students often dread exams because of this feeling and look for quick ways to enhance their memory. Exams play a significant role in determining the future, so it requires a good amount of preparation. With loads of information to retain for a longer period of time, you need to rely on some methods to sharpen your memory. Here are some interesting memory-enhancing methods you can follow to perfect those important exams.

Get organized

One of the important steps is to declutter your studying space and begin by organizing yourself. Scattered notes and books, tangled earphones, messy clothes and any form of disorganization will act as an enemy to a good memory. Start with tidying your room and organizing your notes. You will be able to study, memorize and recall facts efficiently in an organized study space.

Creative association

It is like a mnemonic technique when you associate any information to another in a creative way so that you can retain the information easily. Make your creative associations, funny tricks, or jingles that can make you remember the content during the exam. For example, you can simply remember one tea and two sugars for the tricky spelling of POTASSIUM.

Use the Pomodoro method

If you concentrate on one task for longer durations, it affects the brain in a negative way. Timely breaks are required to reactivate the brain cells. That’s what Pomodoro method is all about. Take a 5-minute break after every 25-minute of productivity or learning session. Take a longer 15-minute break after every four sessions of 25-minutes. Set a timer and follow the method strictly for enhanced memory.

Follow the schedule

Cramming the night before the exam for longer hours is not going to help you retain the facts. Do not overstress your brain with hours-long studying. Instead, prepare a schedule and stick to it. Include small breaks in your study time. For example, study for two hours in the morning with a breakfast break and similarly schedule it for the rest of the day.

Use mnemonics

Mnemonics can help you translate information into a simplified form that is easy to remember. Create a funny or weird memorable phrase by using the first letters of the information. For example, for remembering the cardinal points of the compass – North, East, South West, people have coined the mnemonic ‘Never Eat Shredded Wheat’. It is easier to remember the phrase than the original piece of information.

Try multiple resources

Studying just from a textbook or notes can be boring and make you forget important things during the exam. Look for a different and creative resource such as YouTube video, website, online lectures, diagrams, and pictures, or a friend with whom you can study. A different study resource can help you retain the same information in a different manner, thus, improving memory.
