Ways to Deal with Stress During Exams

Situations like interviews and examinations call for stress, undoubtedly and it is inevitable to escape from exam stress. Sometimes, the constant pressure of exams and giving your best is good as it motivates students to work hard, however, too much of stress can ruin the performance. Some common signs of stress include feeling low and confused, upset stomach, nail biting, fidgeting, having difficulty making decisions, lack of enthusiasm and motivation to finish your tasks, and feeling insomniac. Students also feel anxious, irritable, and experience loss of appetite, with unexplained headaches and tiredness. Therefore, it becomes important to address these symptoms and not let it get out of control. Here are some tips to help you cope with stressful exam season.

  1. Take regular breaks – Include short breaks in your schedule and indulge in some fun activity of your interest. Take a 5-minute break after every 30-minute session and a 20-minute break after 1-2 hours of revision. You can also take longer breaks and go out with your friends, watch a Netflix episode, read a book, or anything else that will take your mind off from exams. This will make you feel relaxed and refreshed when you start studying the next time.

 

  1. Take a walk or exercise – Research has proven that if you exercise or just go outdoors for a walk, it will boost your memory. So, do not sit with the books and feel stressed; go out for a walk early morning or head to the gym. Other than keeping you healthy, it will lighten up your mood thus making you more productive.

 

  1. Eat and sleep well – If you survive on junk food and pull an all-nighter without any exercise or movement, you will become more anxious. Make sure you get your eight hours of good night’s sleep that willallow your brain to recharge. Cut down on caffeine and carbohydrates, and drink lots of water.

 

  1. Plan and prioritize – Prepare a schedule and stick to it. If you prioritize your time and subjects, you will easily get the important work done first, thereby reducing your workload. Draw out a simple timetable with dates of each exam and topics you need to study. This way, you can allocate how much time is required for each subject.

 

  1. Talk to someone – If you are feeling too stressed out, try talking to friends, family, or maybe your personal tutor. A chat with someone will get things under control while making you feel relaxed.

 

  1. Avoid comparison – Do not compare your abilities with your friends. While it is good to discuss topics with your mates, do not compare your revision style with theirs. Everyone has a different approach to revision, so it is better to choose the right method and stick to it. Listening to your fellow student’s progress will only stress you out when you are doing just fine.

Finally, do not get overwhelmed by the exam stress; remember there is life after exams. Although things will get intense and complicated now when you have exams, it won’t last forever.
