M.Tech in Computer Aided Structural Engineering

Civil Engineering primarily deals with planning, design, construction, and operation of infrastructural facilities essential to modern life, ranging from transit systems to offshore structures to space satellites. Major disciplines within Civil Engineering that are closely interrelated are structural, environmental, geotechnical, water resources, transportation, construction and urban planning.

Structural Engineering is a field of Engineering dealing with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. Structural Engineering is usually considered a specialty within Civil Engineering. Structural Engineers are most commonly involved in the design of buildings and large non-building structures; but they can also be involved in the design of machinery, medical equipment, vehicles or any item where structural integrity affects the item's function or safety.

The complexity of modern structures often requires a great deal of creativity from the engineer in order to ensure the structures support and resist the loads they are subjected to. The role of a Structural Engineer demands a significant understanding of both static and dynamic loading and the structures that are available to resist them. Presently, structural engineers need to combine traditional Structural Engineering expertise with an understanding of a wide range of issues related to design of zero carbon buildings.

At present numerous computer aided design tools are available for design and analysis of structures as the structures have intricate shapes, sizes and are subjected to complex loading patterns. It is essential that the present day Structural Engineers need to develop expertise in use of these tools as they speed up design and optimization process.

The School of Civil Engineering at REVA UNIVERSITY offers M. Tech., in Computer Aided Structural Engineering–a postgraduate programme to create motivated, innovative, creative and thinking graduates to fill the roles of Structural Designers who can conceptualize, design, analyze and develop Engineering Structures to meet the modern day requirements.

Both public and private sectors across the globe are investing significantly in high speed railways, metro rail, steel bridges, multi-story apartments, shopping malls, aircrafts, power sector, off shore structures and many such infrastructure projects necessitating the need for Structural Design Engineers.

In this context, the School of Civil Engineering at REVA UNIVERSITY would like to add to the growing human resources needs of infrastructure sector as Structural Designers through its M. Tech. programme in Computer Aided Structural Engineering.

  • PEO-1: Have successful professional careers in construction industry, government, academia and military as innovative engineers.
  • PEO-2:  successfully solve engineering problems associated with the lifecycle of Civil Engineering system, in particular structural engineering by communicating effectively either leading a team or as a team member.

On successful completion of the program, the graduates of M.Tech CE (Computer Aided Structural Engineering) program will be able to:

  • PO-1: Demonstrate in-depth knowledge of computer aided structural Engineering, including wider and global perspective, with an ability to discriminate, evaluate, analyze and synthesize existing and new knowledge, and integration of the same for enhancement of knowledge.
  • PO-2: Analyze complex engineering problems critically, apply independent judgment for synthesizing information to make intellectual and/or creative advances for conducting research in structural engineering, wider theoretical, practical and policy context.
  • PO-3: Think laterally and originally, conceptualize and solve structural engineering problems, evaluate a wide range of potential solutions for those problems and arrive at feasible, optimal solutions after considering public health and safety, cultural, societal and environmental factors in computer aided structural Engineering.
  • PO-4: Extract information pertinent to unfamiliar problems through literature survey and experiments, apply appropriate research methodologies, techniques and tools, design, conduct experiments, analyze and interpret data, demonstrate higher order skill and view things in a broader perspective, contribute individually/in group(s) to the development of scientific/technological knowledge in computer aided structural Engineering.
  • PO-5: Create, select, learn and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and structural engineering and IT tools, including prediction and modeling, to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
  • PO-6: Possess knowledge and understanding of group dynamics, recognize opportunities and contribute positively to collaborative-multidisciplinary scientific research, demonstrate a capacity for self-management and teamwork, decision-making based on open-mindedness, objectivity and rational analysis in order to achieve common goals and further the learning of themselves as well as others.
  • PO-7: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of structural Engineering principles and apply the same to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, manage projects efficiently in respective disciplines and multidisciplinary environments after consideration of economical and financial factors.

Career Opportunities

On completion of this program, students will have opportunities within the country as well as abroad to work and execute Structural Design projects of complex structures such as shells, folded plates, ribbed slabs, tall structures etc. They also have prospects of becoming entrepreneurs in structural consultancy. The field also has ample opportunities for advanced research as the students pursue preliminary research as a part of master’s degree program

  • B E / B Tech in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 50% (45% in case of SC/ST) marks in aggregate of any recognized University / Institution or AMIE or any other qualification recognized as equivalent there to.
