Description of Event:
Smt. Rukmini Shyama Raju Club for Social Service, School of Civil Engineering organized a cleaning programme at puttenahalli lake near Yelahanka. We the students of school of Civil Engineering joined our hands with the team of IASE. The students of social service club had actively participated in cleaning of the lake by removing the waste weeds from the lake.This lake has been listed in the said LDA and is supported to have developed as a habitat of  birds. At present it is just a moss filled pit which emits a stagnated water shink. It is a home to many rare species of birds.Puttenahalli lake is a 10-hectare water body, near Yelahanka, 14km North of Bangalore.

The day began with preparing a boat with drum which is attached to the bamboo sticks in order to go inside the lake. Some of the workers went inside the lake with the help of the boat. A big rope was provided us to remove the weeds from lake to the land. The worker inside the lake use to put the rope around the weeds and rest of the students use to pull the weeds with the help of rope and dump on the other side.

The weeds were removed and spread on the land which was left to dry and get composed. These weeds were further useful as a natural fertilizers to grow the trees on the side of the lake as this lake is a home for bird. This fertilizer is formed by mutting process.

Purpose Of Filling

• Lake is stinking when ever we pass through that side as the cleaning has not been done for several years.
• Could be the ideal scenic attraction in a residential area instead it smells very bad.
• This place was once a bird sanctuary.
• We must keep the water bodies clean as the water is very precious and scarly available now a days.

Outcomes :

• Lake got cleaned.
• The stagnant smell is no more.
• We can see the chirping of birds.
• We can get the natural fertilizer by composing the weed which we have removed from lake for planting the tree around the lake.

Conclusion:

After the conclusion of the programme was held by the School of Civil Engineering where budding engineers of the school who actively participated in cleaning of the lake with some innovative ideas.
