Cut Fold Construct Paper Engineering

Resource Person: Mr. Arun Desai
Faculty Coordinator: Prof. Dr. Vimala Swamy
SDC coordinator: Asst. Prof. Anup Kumar Prasad
Semester: 1st semester, School of Architecture
Venue: Studio 2, School or Architecture, REVA University
Dates: 20th to 22nd September 2019

School of Architecture, REVA University conducted a 3 Days Skill Development for 1st semester students from School of Architecture, REVA University.

Fresh students in Architecture, are filled of imagination and have desire to work on curvy parametric forms. To introduce students the process of creating curvy, informal, geometrical forms the Cut-fold-construct through paper engineering has been planned. Renowned paper engineer Mr. Arun Desai has been the trainer for the workshop. The workshop was systematically planned from learning basic skills to create imaginary form through paper engineering.

Day 1: Getting students started hands-on with folding techniques where they make the models of basic platonic solids all based on A4 sheet of paper, followed by twisted constructions and 3D paper cutting techniques. Through this they explore various tools and techniques, methods and materials.

Day 2: Group of 4-5 students worked on different projects. They participated in the paper constructions based on the techniques they have learnt the previous day. The 3D models include solids, voids, geodesic dome structures, bubble domes, fractal paper constructions, lattice models, curved paper constructions (convex and concave structures) collapsibles and semi collapsibles.

Day 3: Simple form generation exercises through paper as a prototyping material & Model making techniques. The groups also worked on installations which are monumental in size. They made Modular forms, Fluid forms and Hybrid forms.
