School of Architecture, REVA University conducted a 2 Days Workshop for 1st semester students, as a part of their curriculum on Anthropometry and Ergonomics for Basic Design Studio.
People come in all shapes and sizes so one needs to take these physical characteristics into account whenever they design anything that someone will use, from something as simple as a pencil to something as complex as a car. Anthropometrics is the branch of ergonomics that deals with body shape and size.
Anthropometrics is a comparative study of the measurements and capabilities of the human body.
As students of design, a greater understanding of the interaction among humans and other elements of environmental system and products are important to optimize human well being and overall system performance. This workshop helped students to understand the physical stresses that might be associated with an activity, which include repetitive motion, working in awkward position etc.,
Day 1: Started with lecture on Ergonomics and Anthropometry and students were introduced to renowned furniture designs like Stella – by Achille Castglioni, Do hit me chair – by Droog, Protone by Gufram, and students were asked to sketch different ways these furniture could be used. Later different comfortable seating angles were illustrated using Ergonomic Seater angle measuring Device.
Day 2: With the angles and measurements from Day 01, Students started with design of a chair or a seater with a block of thermacol. Their end product illustrated both comfort and ergonomic design.
