‘Equations’ is an NGO that works with local communities and collaborates with organizations to advocate for more inclusive, fair, and sustainable policies; equitable and socially and ecologically conscious development and tourism practices.
4 Students from BATHJ-IV Semester and 12 students from BATHJ-VI Semester were taken on an exposure trip to study Equitable Tourism Options (Equations) and to comprehend the system of approach, and perspectives involved in sustainable tourism and ecotourism. This is the practical part of the learning curriculum of Sustainable tourism study.
Students were given opportunity to learn and experience through discussion, question and answer sessions and watching 3 different documentaries.
The first documentary we were shown was on the diminishing Kumbalangi island of Kochi district of Kerala. Through the documentary we were shown the devastated condition of the local community at the village; how their homes and work places are slowly getting destroyed due to the 2018 floods that are still causing the Kayal backwaters to overflow into their homes.
The second documentary film zeroed in on the beaches of Puri, Odissa, and spoke about how, being given the ‘Blue Flag Certification’, is destroying the livelihoods of the local communities.
