School of Architecture regularly follows the best practice of knowledge sharing where subject matter experts within the school are invited to share their experience and knowledge with our students. Ar. Rajesh Malik, Professor School of Architecture was invited to conduct an expert lecture on the topic- “ Layout Design for Group Housing Projects”. Prof. Rajesh Malik has undertaken several Innovative group housing projects in his career spanning over several decades in Architectural practice.
Prof. Malik shared a few examples of projects undertaken by him to illustrate the basic considerations, practical aspects and challenges facing an architect when designing a group housing project. Prior to this, the students have learnt theory on Cluster design, layout design and open space planning concepts as a part of the curriculum of the course. The students benefitted by seeing the practical examples of projects where these concepts were directly applied within the specific context of the site.
The lecture covered details on site context, climatic considerations, open space planning, cluster design and unit design for large scale housing projects in Chennai designed by Prof. Malik and his team. The students were very intrigued to see various design options generated for the same architectural programme. Their interest and enthusiasm was evident in the interactive question and answer session which followed the case study presentations.
