School of Architecture organized an expert lecture on “Nagara Style Architecture” on 29th October 2020 from 9:15 AM to 10:30 AM at Room no 322. The lecture was organized as an outcome of one of the best practices of the school where an exchange of specialized faculty members is encouraged across courses to benefit the students. 

The students of 3rd semester, B.Arch. have been introduced to Hindu Temple Architecture in various parts of India. The northern part of India has unique style of Architectural detailing called Nagara Style of Architecture, which is entirely different from southern region temples. An insight about nagara style of architecture is essential to the students to understand the regional variations and features related to it. 

Ar. Shubhi Sonal is an architect, planner, an experienced academician, heritage enthusiast and History of Architecture faculty with an analytical perception. She is having elaborated students on nagara style architecture, She began with Dasavathara Temple, Deogarh quoting its timeline and existence of heritage structures before 6th century which is not documented. She explained on re-creation of the drawings and sketches of the ruined heritage structures and evolution of the temples based on the need and refinement and derivation of forms and details based on trials. With several examples she explicated the development of Nagara style architecture its Shikara development, Buddhist influences, elements of it. 

She further went describing Odisha Style of Nagara Architecture, elaborated on its regional development (Kalinga dynasty), emphasized on the elements, importance of form, its monumental scale, materials used, and construction technology. She explained about three types of towers and where those are used in a temple complex, shikara and terminologies involved with detailed explanation pertaining to Odisha Nagara Style Architecture. She linked with Lingaraja temple, Orissa, and Sun Temple Konark as examples and explained their features.

It was indeed an exceptional lecture, students had interacted and understood the concepts introduced. They were motivated and understood to need to study to appreciate History of Architecture as an architecture course.
