Report on Hands-on Workshop on“Forensic Science”
School: Applied Sciences

Date: 7th and 8th February, 2019.

The Department of Biotechnology had organized a hands-on workshop on “Forensic Science” with the emphasis on questioned document and handwriting analysis, forgery detection, Cyber forensics, Crime Scene investigation and Fingerprint lifting, development and analysis. The resource persons for the sessions were Dr. Ranjeet Kumar Singh and team from Sherlock Institute of Forensic Science, Delhi and Dr. Phaneendar and team from Clue for evidence, Bangalore.  UG and PG students from the Department of Biotechnology and Biochemistry actively participated in the workshop. 

Day 1 – Questioned Document and Signature analysis, Cyber forensics
The session started with the introduction of the resource person by Dr. Ramya. M, Assistant Professor, Department of Biotechnology, followed by the technical talk by Mr. Phaneendar, Court Commissioned Forensic expert for courts in and out of India, including High court of Karnataka. 
The speaker started introducing the basics of the styles of handwriting strokes and illustrated the matching of signature with few case studies. He also emphasized on the analysis of forgeries. Students were given activity sheets to detect the signatures and match them to know the percentage of similarities. Strokes of the handwriting styles were thrown a light upon to carefully evaluate the forgeries.
Dr. Ranjeet Kumar Singh took over the post-lunch session on Cyber forensics. He emphasized on online fake accounts, ways to know the original and fake accounts. Hacking of the accounts by knowing the passwords were also dealt.  Students were made to know about the information processing from the browsing sites and social media such as google and facebook.

Day 2 – Crime scene investigation and fingerprint analysis
Dr. Ranjeet Kumar, Mr. Phaneendar and Mr. Mahesh introduced the protocols and techniques followed at a crime scene from a forensic expert. They had a crime scene set up in the Yoga room of the Science block. Students were given hands-on training in handling a crime scene – precautions to be followed from the entry through the process of investigation; scanning and securing the scene; understanding the significance of the evidences; listing the evidence, collection and transport of the evidence.  Each procedure was dealt in detail and made the students to participate proactively. 
Post lunch, students were taught the significance and importance of the fingerprint in the crime scene. Hands-on training to lift fingerprints, lipstick mark and footprints from the crime scene, developing the fingerprints and mapping for analysis was given to the students.  Ms. Sheza and team coordinated the workshop very well. Students actively participated and gained hands-on exposure on crime scene handling.
