The School of Civil Engineering had arranged a Technical Visit to Markonahalli dam, Kunigal Taluk, Tumkur dated on 17/10/2019, for 3rd Semester students of A,B,C,D,E & F sections. These students were accompanied by the faculties. The visit commenced in the Morning where students came to know about the history, construction and working of reservoir at Markonahalli which utilized the water of Shimsha river. It is the first dam in the world using the Siphon system. It is built across Shimsha River by Sir M Visweswaraiah and Ganesh Iyer. The foundation stone was laid by his highness the late Sri. Krishnarajendra Wadiyar, Maharaja of Mysore on Thursday the 20th Jan 1938. The project was complete in the year 1940. The revised cost of the project is Rs. 29.07 lakhs. 41 villages are benefited under this project. The total catchment area of the reservoir is 4130 sq. km of which 336.7 sq. km is independent and the rest is intercepted. There are in all 647 tank in the catchment of this reservoir. The total length of the dam including earthen and masonry dam is 1609m. The maximum height of dam is 22.5m and the top width of masonry dam is 3.66m and that of earthen dam is 5.5m which provided for a single lane road way. The storage capacity of the reservoir at FTL is 68 M.cum including a dead storage of 4 M.cum. The total land acquired from submersion under the reservoir up to FTL 731.570m is 1336 hectares.
