Report on visit to S.R.B Brick Factory & Concrete Blocks Factory, Angalapura, Doddagubbi, Bangalore

NUMBER OF STUDENTS: 59 students, 1st Semester
OBJECTIVE- The visit to the brick factory and concrete blocks production to get a hands-on experience of making of the bricks, to demonstrate and to understand the structure and composition of various brick bonds learnt in the SSBC I class.
ABOUT THE STUDY
Brick Making: The students were exposed to the entire process of manufacture of bricks. Firstly, they learnt about the raw materials that was used for the procedure, mainly clay and water. They visited the area where clay was being tamped. The students were guided to try tamping the wet clay and achieve the right consistency. Further, they also got to work on how to mold the clay into the ideal size of bricks. Also, they were briefed about the drying process and burning of bricks.
Brick Bonds: The students formed groups to try out different brick masonry bonds (such as stretcher, header, Rat trap, English and Flemish bond) using the bricks available on site.
SITE VISIT OUTCOME
• The students got the opportunity to participate in making of the bricks at the factory.
• The site visit helped in understanding the materials, procedure and pricing in detail needed for making of the bricks and concrete blocks.
• The interaction with the laborers and the information learnt from the makers gave the students a clear understanding of the whole process right from where the sand is acquired to the last process of burning the bricks.
• The activity on Brick bonds – giving them a direct experience on how the bonds are formed.
• The interaction with the owner gave the students an insight into the investment details of the brick and concrete factory.
