Organized Webinar on “Industrial IoT in Manufacturing – What’s next ?”

School of Electronics and Communication Engineering had organized a webinar on “Industrial IoT in Manufacturing – What’s next? ” on 21.08.2020 ,from 10:30 am to 12:00 pm.
Objective: The objective of this session is to create an interest among the students in the areas of Industrial and home automation achieved through IoT. The session was to bring awareness on what the future of IoT related works and the internship opportunities available.
Brief Bio-data of Speaker: Mr. Gurjit Singh Gill
Mr.Gurjit Singh is a Founder Director and Design Head of Gill Instruments is a third party company of Texas Instruments. Gill Instruments provides design solutions in the area of Embedded Systems and Manufacture development tools for MSP430 family.
In recent years, he has served extensively as a consultant to industry ranging from start-ups to fortune 100 companies. Recently he has launched cloud Gateway for Internet of Things for factory Automation and Building Monitoring system. His area of expertise are wireless sensor network and smart instrumentation.
He has been working closely with Texas Instruments for University programme since 2003. He has taken the initiative to set up embedded systems labs across the country in various Universities and Engineering colleges. He contributed some of the best development tools available today for embedded system designs. He regularly conducts Embedded system design & IoT workshops, where he has trained more than five thousand engineers in past 10 years.

SESSION REPORT:
The webinar was hosted by Prof.Nataraj Urs and the Director, School of ECE, welcomed the distinguished speaker and the participants.
Mr.Gurjit Singh started his talk by thanking the Chancellor, REVA University & Director, School of ECE for the opportunity given to him to address the students. He shared how the word internet was viewed way back during his college days. Through the talk he wanted the attendees to appreciate the “Power of Less”, as less is more: Less energy, less time, less power, less money. The keywords for IoT for Gill Instruments, Sense, Connect & Manage was highlighted through out his presentation.
The presentation included the various sensors : Level sensors, Energy Monitor, DG Monitor, Pressure Sensor, Water Monitor, Temperature Monitor that are used to monitor & control the various activities in the factory through the App Gill- Sense. All these parameters can be monitored and controlled using Smart phone along with the App. He showcased the Water Management System designed which can be monitored again using phone as he loves water and as per his saying “Thousands live without love, but not one without water”. The social responsibility a design engineer should have was definitely brought to the students purview.
Simple home automation systems which can be used along with old switching systems developed by Gill Instruments called Switchy had the interest of many of the students piqued. The support of Alexa along with Switchy was one of the highlights.
What the students should expect in terms of IoT in future and the skill sets they require to address the issues and opportunities in these areas where reiterated by the Speaker and he shared his willingness to cooperate and collaborate with the School in setting up labs and provide internship to students was well appreciated by the attendees and the Director.
The talk was insightful and the Director, School of ECE thanked the Speaker Mr. Gurjit Singh Gill for his time and effort and expressed eagerness in cementing a meaningful relationship through collaborations in setting up labs and providing internship opportunities for students.
