School of Architecture, REVA University commemorated World Architecture Day 2019 on 14th October 2019 by organizing an award ceremony for student achievers followed by a guest lecture. Ar. Anup Naik, Founder and Principal architect of Space Matrix- a renowned architecture firm in Bangalore was the esteemed chief guest for the event. The event was attended by the entire student and faculty community of School of Architecture who gathered together to celebrate the scope and spirit of Architecture.
Introduced in 2005 by the Union of International Architects (UIA), Architecture Day is a day to express appreciation for the work architects do and to celebrate some of the finest global architectural achievements. The day is traditionally celebrated globally on the first Monday in October to coincide with the United Nations’ World Habitat Day. Every year, the Union of International Architects selects a new theme for the day and encourages its members to link their events and activities to the current year's theme. This year's theme is "Architecture-Housing for all".
The event was inaugurated in the presence of Chief Guest Ar. Anup Naik and Dr. Vimala Swamy, Director, School of Architecture. One of the best practices followed at School of Architecture is the institution of annual awards for students who have shown excellence in academics as well as extracurricular activities. The inaugural ceremony was followed by the award ceremony where the students received their awards under various categories from Ar. Anup Naik and Dr. Vimala Swamy.
A guest lecture by Ar. Anup Naik on the topic “Housing for All” was the highlight of the event. Ar. Naik focused on the role that architects need to play in order to achieve the sustainable development goals. He supplemented his lecture with case studies of two of his works where passive as well as active techniques were employed to achieve sustainability. Students were greatly inspired to see the design process and community engagement followed for planning of Housing for ITC Bhadrachalam employees. The use of technology and flexible furniture was one of the main features of the design along with seamless integration of climatic and socio cultural aspects. Ar. Naik concluded his talk with a video about James Law’s OPOD housing in Hong Kong.
Keeping with the theme of World Architecture Day, mementos were designed to showcase the unique architectural heritage of Hampi using photographs captured by Vijay Bellary, a student of 7th Semester. The event concluded with a formal vote of thanks rendered by Ar. Harshita D. Dr. Vimala Swamy expressed gratitude to the chief guest for sparing his valuable time and handed over a small token of our appreciation to him.
