Hands-on Training Program on Python from Scratch

REVA University Students’ branch of Computer Society of India (CSI) and the School of Computing & IT, conducted a Hands-on Training Program on “Python from Scratch” for the students of all Schools on 15th Nov., 2017 in the Central Library browsing center. The inaugural session of this full day training program was presided over by Dr. Sunilkumar S Manvi, Hon’ble Director, School of Computing & IT. Dr. Mallikarjun Kodabagi, Deputy Director, School of Computing & IT, Dr. Mallikarjun Shastry, Assistant Director, School of Computing & IT, Dr. Vishwanath Hulipaled, Deputy Director, Research & Innovation Cell, Dr. Gopal Krishna Shyam, Associate Professor, School of Computing & IT also graced the occasion.

While addressing the participants, Dr. Manvi encouraged all to continue learning Python and other technologies even after the completion of the training and apply the learning to projects. Dr. Manvi insisted that students should continually enhance their technical skill set and make best use of all the learning opportunities provided by CSI, the School and the University, for better employability and a great career.

The students of first year Computer Science & IT, known by the group ‘CodClan’, i.e. a clan of coders, presented their project, an online tutor to the audience. This is a web based platform where students of all schools can learn and practice four programming languages as of now- C,C++,Java and Python. The site has an online compiler to see the results of practice code. The site is continuously being enhanced with more features.

The inauguration was followed by the technical sessions.

Contents of the technical sessions were:

 Python Introduction –Installation, Keywords and Identifiers, Statements and Comments, Datatypes, Import, Operators

 Python Native Datatypes – Numbers, List, Tuple, String, Set, Dictionary

 Python Flow Control-if-else, for loop, while loop, break and continue

 Python Functions – Arguments, Parameter Passing, Recursion.

 Python Files – File Modes, File operations (reading and writing)

 Python Exception Handling

 Project Modules

Organizing Team – Student Office Bearers of CSI( Sudhindra G, Tanmay, Venkatesh, Zaid, Ramya, Ranjitha), Mrs. Nimrita Koul & Prof. Nikhil Tengli from the School of Computing & IT.

In the feedback, students expressed satisfaction over the quality of contents and delivery of the training and a need to organize more such programs was observed. During the concluding session, students were assigned a project to complete individually and submit before 25th Nov., 2017 for earning their certificates.

The training was attended by 100 students from all schools and all semesters.
