Overview of the Program

The mathematical sciences are a group of areas of study that includes, in addition to mathematics, those academic disciplines that are primarily mathematical in nature but may not be universally considered subfields of mathematics proper. Statistics, for example, is mathematical in its methods but grew out of scientific observations which merged with inverse probability and grew through applications in the social sciences. Computer science, computational science, population genetics, operations research, cryptology, econometrics, theoretical physics, chemical reaction, network theory and actuarial science are other fields that may be considered part of mathematical sciences.

Mathematical sciences work is becoming an increasingly integral and essential component of a growing array of areas of investigation in biology, medicine, social sciences, business, advanced design, climate, finance, advanced materials, and much more. This work involves the integration of mathematics, statistics, and computation in the broadest sense, and the interplay of these areas with areas of potential application; the mathematical sciences are best conceived of as including all these components. These activities are crucial to economic growth, national competitiveness, and national security.

The School of Applied Sciences at REVA UNIVERSITY has designed to offer B.Sc. in Mathematics, statistics and Computer Science as an undergraduate degree programme to create motivated, enthusiastic, thinking and creative graduates to fill the roles as mathematics teachers, statisticians, algorithm developers, computer programmers, professors, scientists, professionals and administrators.

Indian economy is experiencing an upward growth right from the beginning of 21st century except for a short stint during the mid of present decade necessitating well qualified science graduates to work as teachers, professors, scientists, professionals and often administrators. At present more than 400 million youth are below 18 years of age and government is committed to increase the GER to 30% by 2020, further necessitating more number of teachers and professors to work in schools and colleges. The proposed B.Sc. (M St Cs) programme designed will act as a foundation and first degree to prepare mathematics teachers, statisticians, algorithm developers, computer programmers professors, scientists, professionals and administrators to meet the challenges of growing economy as well as to meet the growing aspirations of the youth.

The B.Sc. (M St Cs) programme at the School of Applied Sciences, has been developed by the members of the faculty based on interactions with various universities, research establishments and industries in India and abroad.

The curriculum is outcome based and it imbibes required theoretical concepts and practical skills in the domain. By undergoing this programme, students develop critical, analytical thinking and problem solving abilities for a smooth transition from academic to real-life work environment. In addition, students are trained in communication skills and interdisciplinary topics to enhance their scope. The above mentioned features of the programme, advanced teaching and learning resources, and experience of the faculty members with their strong connections with industry and research organizations makes this programme unique.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The programme acts as a foundation degree and helps to develop critical, analytical and problem solving skills at first level. The foundation degree makes the graduates employable in scientific organisations and also to assume administrative positions in various types of organisations. With further acquisition of higher level degrees help the graduates to pursue a career in academics or scientific organisations as a researcher.

The Programme Educational Objectives are to prepare the students to:

  • work alongside engineering, medical, ICT professionals and scientists to assist them in scientific problem solving
  • act as administrators in public, private and government organisations or business administrator or entrepreneur with further training and education
  • pursue masters and doctoral research degrees to work in colleges, universities as professors or as scientists in research establishments

  • Develop computer programmes for the algorithms developed to solve mathematical problems
  • Use appropriate computational tools and techniques for solving mathematical problems
  • Conduct experiments as per the procedures, tabulate data and interpret results
  • Work as a member of a scientific project team and communicate across teams
  • Conduct himself as a responsible citizen
  • Choose appropriate online programmes for further learning, participate in seminars and conferences

Eligibility Criteria

Pass in PUC/10+2 with Mathematics as compulsory subject and at least 45% marks (40% in case of candidate belonging to SC/ST category) of any recognized Board/Council of any other qualification recognized as equivalent there to.
