Overview of the Program

Civil engineering primarily deals with planning, design, construction, and operation of infrastructural facilities essential to modern life, ranging from transit systems to offshore structures to space satellites. Major disciplines within civil engineering that are closely interrelated are structural, environmental, geotechnical, water resources, transportation, construction and urban planning.

Structural engineering is a field of engineering dealing with the analysis and design of structures that support or resist loads. Structural engineering is usually considered a specialty within civil engineering. Structural engineers are most commonly involved in the design of buildings and large non-building structures; but they can also be involved in the design of machinery, medical equipment, vehicles or any item where structural integrity affects the item's function or safety.

The complexity of modern structures often requires a great deal of creativity from the engineer in order to ensure the structures support and resist the loads they are subjected to. The role of a structural engineer demands a significant understanding of both static and dynamic loading and the structures that are available to resist them. Presently, structural engineers need to combine traditional structural engineering expertise with an understanding of a wide range of issues related to design of zero carbon buildings.

At present numerous computer aided design tools are available for design and analysis of structures as the structures have intricate shapes, sizes and subjected to complex loading patterns. It is essential that the present day structural engineers need to develop expertise in use of these tools as they speed up design and optimization process.

The School of Civil Engineering at REVA UNIVERSITY offers M. Tech., in Computer Aided Structural Engineering–a postgraduate programme to create motivated, innovative, creative and thinking graduates to fill the roles of Structural Designers who can conceptualize, design, analyze and develop Engineering Structures to meet the modern day requirements.

Both public and private sectors across the globe are investing significantly in high speed railways, metro rail, steel bridges, multi-story apartments, shopping malls, aircrafts, power sector, off shore structures and many such infrastructure projects necessitating the need for structural design engineers.

In this context, The School of Civil Engineering at REVA UNIVERSITY would like to add to the growing human resources needs of infrastructure sector as structural designers through its M. Tech. programme in Computer Aided Structural Engineering.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The aim of the programme is to produce postgraduates with advanced knowledge and understanding of contemporary structural engineering; higher order critical, analytical, problem solving and transferable skills; ability to think rigorously and independently to meet higher level expectations of infrastructure industry, academics, research establishments or take up entrepreneurial route.

The Programme Educational Objectives are to prepare the students to:

  • be structural design engineers to design contemporary civil engineering structures
  • act as administrators in public, private and government organisations or business administrators or entrepreneurs with further training and education
  • pursue doctoral research degree to work in colleges, universities as professors or as scientists in research establishments

Programme Outcomes (POs)

After undergoing this programme, a student will be able to:

  • design models of structures using software
  • perform accurate calculations for stresses on each element of a structure for external reactions and forces
  • suggest materials that would be suitable for the structure
  • assess budget for the project
  • liaison with construction contractors to ensure that newly erected structures are sound and robust
  • use computer aided design and simulation tools for design and optimization of structural design
  • lead a team to ensure that projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget
  • conform to cultural, environmental, sustainability and ethical issues
  • communicate across teams verbally, visually and by writing
  • choose an appropriate online educational programme for further learning, participate in seminars and conferences

Students completing this program will have opportunities within the country as well as abroad to work and execute structural design projects of complex structures such as shells, folded plates, ribbed slabs, tall structures etc. They also have prospects of becoming entrepreneurs in structural consultancy. The field also has ample opportunities for advanced research as the students pursue preliminary research as a part of master’s degree program


  • B E / B Tech in Civil Engineering with a minimum of 50% (45% in case of SC/ST) marks in aggregate of any recognized University / Institution or AMIE or any other qualification recognized as equivalent there to.
