Course Overview

Civil engineering primarily deals with planning, design, construction, and operation of infrastructural facilities essential to modern life, ranging from transit systems to offshore structures to space satellites. Major disciplines within civil engineering that are closely interrelated are structural, environmental, geotechnical, water resources, transportation, construction and urban planning.

Transportation engineering is one of the major branches of civil engineering and it involves planning, design, construction, operation and maintenance of transportation facilities. The facilities support air, highway, railroad, pipeline, water, and even space transportation. Transportation engineering includes sizing of transportation facilities, selection of materials and design of pavement and geometry of roadway.

In Transportation Engineering, students acquire advanced know-how concerning the planning, design, operations, performance, evaluation, maintenance and rehabilitation of transportation systems including their economics and social aspects. This field imbibes in each student analytic, problem-solving and management skills suitable for public and private sector professional works. Students are trained on the application of various softwares and programming skills for simulation of traffic flow and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) to address urban transportation issues. The challenges faced in transportation engineering are developing network links and major terminals to satisfy transportation demands, with due regard for the resultant land-use, environmental and other impacts of these facilities.

The School of Civil Engineering at REVA UNIVERSITY offers M. Tech., in Transportation Engineering and Management –a postgraduate programme to create motivated, innovative, creative and thinking graduates to fill the roles of Transportation Engineers and managers who can conceptualize, design, analyze and develop and manage transportation Systems to meet the modern day requirements.

Both public and private sectors across the globe are investing significantly in road development, airport construction, high speed railways, metro rail, bridges, water ways and many such infrastructure projects necessitating the need for transportation engineers.

In this context, The School of Civil Engineering at REVA UNIVERSITY would like to add to the growing human resources needs of infrastructure sector as transportation designers and managers through its M. Tech. programme in Transportation Engineering and Management.

Programme Educational Objectives (PEOs)

The aim of the programme is to produce postgraduates with advanced knowledge and understanding of contemporary transportation systems; higher order critical, analytical, problem solving and transferable skills; ability to think rigorously and independently to meet higher level expectations of industry, academics, research establishments or take up entrepreneurial route.

The Programme Educational Objectives are to prepare the students to:

  • be transportation engineers and managers to design and manage contemporary transportation systems
  • pursue doctoral research degree to work in colleges, universities as professors or as scientists in research establishments
  • act as administrators in public, private and government organisations or business administrators or entrepreneurs with further training and education

Programme Outcomes (POs)

On successful completion of the Program the students shall be able to:

  • Apply the fundamental knowledge of mathematics topics like calculus, matrix theory, and finite differences, Optimization methods and the fundamental knowledge of physics, chemistry and basic Engineering.
  • Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
  • Design a system, component or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufractur ability, and sustainability
  • Function on multidisciplinary teams
  • Identify, formulate, and solve Civil Engineering problems in accordance with the relevant standard codes of practice
  • Understand the role of Civil Engineers and ethical responsibility
  • Communicate effectively through verbal, written, and graphical modes.
  • Perform on the basis of broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
  • Recognize the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
  • Incorporate specific contemporary issues into the identification, formulation, and solution of a specific civil engineering problems
  • Use the techniques, skills, and modern civil engineering tools necessary for engineering practice

On completion of the program, the students have wide scope for placement in Multi-National Companies Government Organizations, such as the Public Works Department, Highways and Transportation Authorities, Planning and Development Departments, Educational Institutions and Research Organisations. There is ample of scope for entrepreneurship.


  • B E / B Tech in Civil Engineering/Construction Technology with a minimum of 50% (45% in case of SC/ST) marks in aggregate of any recognized University / Institution or AMIE or any other qualification recognized as equivalent there to.
