M. Tech. in Power and Energy Systems [Part Time]

The M. Tech in Power and energy is designed keeping in view the need for power system management, energy management, conservation of energy, current rapid growth of power generation by renewable energy systems and de-centralization of power distribution. This course is designed to give greater emphasis on core power & energy system and efficient distribution of conventional as well as renewable energy systems. There are ample number of courses providing knowledge in specialized areas of power system management, power system protection, demand side management, environmental effect, technological advances in conventional power generation systems like hydel, thermal, nuclear, etc.; renewable energy sources like wind, solar PV, solar thermal, biomass, fuel cell, mini & micro hydel, etc., modernized energy storage systems like battery, fuel cell, pumped storage, fly wheel, ultra capacitor storage, etc., energy conservation and building code (ECBC), energy audits in building, industries, institutions, power plants, etc., power quality, electromagnetic compatibility, reactive power management, smart grid, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) system, automation of distribution system, hybrid power system, integration of renewable energy into the grid, energy conservation ACT 2001, electricity ACT 2003 & grid code 2010. These courses will facilitate the students to choose specialized areas of their interest. Adequate attention is given to students to equip with application oriented advanced knowledge.

The programme is thus designed to expose the students to various subjects having applications in power & energy sectors, IT and electronics related industries through outcome based teaching and learning process which emphasizes practical exposure rather than memorization. A variety of activities such as mini projects, seminars, interaction with industries, cultural activities and social activities are in place to shape the all-round development of students.

  • This course will help the students to take up the energy auditor examination which is being conducted by Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), Govt. of India and become a certified energy auditor. This certification will help the student to become an independent energy auditor to carry out the energy audits in industries, building, etc.
  • Flexibility to choose various fields upon graduation.
  • The students can take research work in the area of smart grid, micro grid, LVDC distribution system, etc.
  • The students can take up the work in developing renewable energy systems like wind power plants, solar power plants, etc.
  • Opportunity to work on live problems like mitigation of power quality problems in industries and electrical distribution system.
  • This course enables the students to gain the knowledge in optimal power flow with minimized distribution loss and also help in to take up the franchise of electrical distribution.

The students completing M Tech in Power and Energy will have job opportunities in the following sectors:

  • Power Generation – to study on different types of conventional and non-conventional power generation plants, to study the impact on environment by different kinds of power generation,
  • Power Sector – to understand the various schemes introduced by the Central Govt. & State Govt. for improving the distribution system, to design robust power system, to estimate transmission & distribution loss, to optimize the location of reactive power compensation to strengthen the distribution system, to carry out study on demand side management (DSM) to implement measures to keep the system secure, to enhance the operational performance of electric power generation, transmission & distribution equipments, to maintain quality of power, to mitigate harmonics, to damp oscillations,
  • Renewable Energy Sources - to harness power from renewable sources using power electronics devices, to solve the issues related to integration of RES with grid, to develop and use various algorithms for enhanced power generation by RES, to enhance the capability of O&M of RES, to study integration of these sources with the grid
  • Transport - electric vehicles, to design & develop of electric vehicles, to develop various algorithms for improvement in performance of electric vehicles, to enhanced capability of power electronics for electric vehicles, to vehicle to grid power transactions
  • Power Electronics - design of compact and highly efficient power supplies, to develop various most advanced algorithms for charging circuits for different applications like electric appliances, battery energy storage system, ultra-capacitor applications, aerospace power requirements, UPS, applications in power system using FACTS devices, interconnection of two regions via HVDC link
  • Computer – developing algorithms to solve complex functions, developing simulation tools to simulate the entire system, applications to SMART grid, operation and maintenance of micro-grids and smart grids, implementation of SCADA system for electric distribution system, etc.

 

Eligibility

  • B E / B Tech in EE / EEE / ECE / CSE with a minimum of 50% (45% in case of SC/ST) marks in aggregate of any recognized University / Institution or AMIE or any other qualification recognized as equivalent there to.

Course Duration: 6 Semesters (3 Years)
